Hummel Aviation
USA Part 103 Buyer’s GuideHummel Aircraft
All metal, in a category made of tube and fabric. The UltraCruiser is aluminium, with differential ailerons and a Half-VW on the nose. It lives outside without rotting, and it plugs into the deepest engine community in homebuilt aviation. They publish no price, so we grade them unrated.
½OF A VOLKSWAGEN
The Half-VW is a shortened VW conversion, and it is the whole point of Hummel. Cheap, understood by thousands of people, and parts are everywhere. It also means your powerplant options list is short by design.

The lineup
Part 103 Cruisers.
The Part 103 Hummel. All-metal single seat, Half-VW power, differential ailerons. Canopy and flap kits available.
Same airframe, the V-Twin variant of the engine.
Also Part 103. Ask the shop how it differs from the UltraCruiser before you order plans.
The H5 Sport Cruiser and the Hummel Bird are not Part 103
The H5 is larger and runs a four-cylinder VW. Different aircraft, different rulebook. The flap kit shares the H5 name, which is confusing, but the aircraft is not the kit.
Who it suits
- Builders who want to work in metal rather than wood or fabric.
- Half-VW people, and there are a lot of them, with parts and knowledge everywhere.
- Pilots who need the aircraft to survive outdoor storage.
- Anyone who wants an engine they can rebuild themselves for the price of a car part.
What you give up
- The Half-VW is the engine list. There is no shopping around.
- No published pricing at all. Every conversation starts with a phone call.
- The engine comes from Scott Casler in Coolidge, Arizona, which is a second supplier in your chain.
- A separate storefront exists at flyhummel.com, so confirm who you are actually buying from.

Part 103 compliance is yours
An aircraft marketed as Part 103 capable can exceed the 254 lb powered empty-weight limit once engines, instruments, and options are added. You weigh the finished vehicle and you confirm compliance with 14 CFR 103 before you fly it. See the Part 103 disclaimer.

Your buyer just configured an airplane. Could they do that on your site?
Built by Christopher Eller. If you build Part 103 aircraft and want this on your own domain, with the leads landing in your inbox instead of ours, that is the whole job and I do all of it.
